Patient Notice: Assistance Policy

To ensure the safety, dignity, and appropriate care of our patients upon arrival and during mobility-related activities in the clinic. This policy defines responsibilities, clarifies that staff are not permitted to lift or transport patients, and sets requirements for patient ambulatory status or accompaniment.

All patients arriving for appointments must be ambulatory (able to walk independently or use their own mobility device such as a walker or wheelchair) or must be accompanied by a capable caregiver, family member, or medical transport service.

Clinical staff (clinical or administrative) shall not assist with manual lifting, transferring, carrying, or transporting patients including from vehicle to clinic, between rooms, or from wheelchair to exam table except in true emergencies where immediate medical intervention is required.

This restriction is in accordance with Arizona scope of practice regulations, which do not authorize Medical Assistants or EMTs to lift or physically transfer patients as part of their clinical duties.

If a patient is non-ambulatory or requires physical assistance beyond what this policy allows, the patient must arrange for an escort or transport service prior to arrival. The clinic may reschedule the appointment if accompaniment or transport arrangements are not met.

Staff may assist with positioning or stabilizing mobility equipment (e.g., locking wheelchair brakes, ensuring walker is properly placed) but not initiate movement of the patient’s body weight.

Please bring a caregiver or companion to assist you during your visit.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in helping us maintain a safe and respectful environment for everyone.

Thank you,
Arizona State Urological Institute
